ELDORET, Sept 2026 -The Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Eldoret, Dr Christopher Ruto, has called on politicians to stop utterances and actions that are spreading fear among Kenyans as the country gears up for the 2027 General Election.
Speaking after a meeting of the Cathedral Council at St. Matthew’s Cathedral in Eldoret, Bishop Ruto strongly condemned the recent abduction of a journalist from The Standard newspaper, saying such acts undermine democracy.
The Bishop also castigated remarks by a politician who claimed that a certain community should vote for a particular leader, terming it a violation of constitutional rights.
“Every Kenyan has a constitutional right to vote according to their own will, without intimidation or coercion from anyone,” Bishop Ruto said.
He underscored the need to protect press freedom, stressing that journalists must be allowed to discharge their duties freely without fear or favour.
Bishop Ruto further urged elected leaders to shun premature campaigns and instead serve the electorate who put them in office.
“I urge leaders in office to first work for Kenyans. The time for politics and campaigns has not yet come; it is a great injustice for Kenyans to be denied services because of early politics,” he concluded.
