Zubeida Kananu Bags ‘Tutams’ as Kenya Editors Guild President

Zubeidah Kananu has retained her position as the President of the Kenya Editors Guild (KEG) for a two-year term.

She shrugged off stiff opposition from Citizen TV journalist Yvonne Okwara.

The Saturday virtual duel for the highly coveted seat saw Kananu bag 72 votes against her challenger’s 58.

Radio Africa Group’s Francis Openda was elected unopposed as Vice President.

In KEG’s Council Membership, the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), Agnes Mwangagi, and Technical University of Kenya (TUK), Dr Julius Bosire whitewashed their opponents Topista Nabusoba and Nathan Masambu (Daystar University).

They will represent Radio and Academia respectively.

Millicent Awuor (Television), Linda Bach (Print), and Kenfrey Kiberenge (Online Media) were elected unopposed into the Council.

Also elected unchallenged were Ruth Nesoba, Ng’ang’a Mbugua, and Martin Masai, as KEG’s trustees.

Sophie Kalbiria is an Advocate and a Law Society of Kenya Member who supervised the electoral exercise.

On April 29th 2023, Kananu succeeded Churchill Otieno as the KEG President.

In her congratulatory message, she expressed that the Guild’s dedicated efforts to strengthen and enhance the resilience of the media industry contributed to her winning a second term.

“I am deeply honoured and sincerely grateful for the trust you have placed in me by electing me to serve a second term as President of our Guild,” she stated.

She lauded her closest opponent and friend for conducting a spirited and dignified campaign.

“I look forward to working with Yvonne to make KEG better,” she said.
