HOMABAY, Kenya – Optimism among residents of Homabay and Migori Counties continues to grow as progress on the 74-kilometre Mbita–Sindo–Kiabuya–Sori Road steadily advances.
Snaking along the shores of Lake Victoria, the upgraded bitumen-standard (B2/C867) road will open a vital transport corridor connecting fishing towns, farmlands, and trading centres upon its completion.
Interior Security and National Coordination Permanent Secretary (PS) Dr Raymond Omollo has stated that the project is already transforming the region’s economic landscape. “It will improve connectivity, enhancing trade and market access, enabling farmers and traders to transport produce and fish with ease,” he said.
The economically viable route, passing through Ruma National Park and fertile agricultural zones, is also attracting new investments in tourism and the blue economy, with better access to hotels, landing sites, and fish processing ventures.
Dr Omollo noted that this development is expected to generate new job opportunities and stimulate local businesses, contributing to the region’s economic growth.
“The road’s upgrade will increase the competitiveness of local produce in regional markets, further boosting the local economy.”
Of great importance, the road is improving access to schools, health facilities, and government services, an essential step towards inclusive socio-economic growth.
Children can now travel easily to school, while patients can access medical care without the hindrances of poor infrastructure.
“It will also enhance emergency response times for ambulances and other services, potentially saving lives.”
As the project approaches completion, residents and local leaders remain optimistic about the positive impact it will have on their lives and livelihoods. With improved infrastructure, the region is poised to become a hub of economic activity, attracting investors and boosting the local economy.
“This road will be a game-changer for our community, it will improve the quality of our lives, especially for the fisherfolk,” remarked a local resident in Sindo. “We expect to see increased economic activity, more jobs, and better living standards.”
