SUNA, Migori –The local traders and residents in Migori County are set to benefit tremendously as the construction of the Suna-Marindi Modern Market undertaken by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA), nears completion.
The new market aims to improve the trading environment due to historical harsh conditions experienced by the traders, such as scorching heat, heavy rains, and muddy grounds.
Interior Security and National Coordination Permanent Secretary (PS) Dr Raymond Omollo said that majority of them have been selling their goods in temporary stalls and outdoor spaces, often risking their safety, comfort, and hygiene.
“We want to change this situation by offering well-designed modern stalls providing traders with secure and organised working spaces especially women, to have a safe, clean, and supportive environment to grow their businesses,” Dr Omollo noted.
The project is curated with upgraded sanitation facilities with new ablution blocks, and paved access roads that facilitate movement within and to the market.
It also includes expanded, well-maintained parking zones to serve both farmers bringing produce and customers, ensuring an efficient flow of goods and people.
The national government, in close partnership with the devolved units, is constructing over 400 modern markets across the country in line with the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP).
They also have ICT hubs to support digital trade and online work, cold storage rooms for fresh produce to improve the quality and shelf life of perishable goods, and daycare facilities for trading mothers with young children. Many are in various stages of construction, with some already completed and handed over, like the Suswa and Ntulele markets in Narok County.
Alongside the modern markets, the President William Ruto-led administration has unveiled a robust and heavy investment into the upgrading of infrastructure to link them to the rest of the country.
“This is intended to reduce transportation and operational costs and connect our farmers and traders to larger markets,” Dr Omollo said.
When fully completed, the Suna-Marindi Modern market will restore dignity to local traders, promote economic growth, and reinforce Migori’s role as a vital commercial hub in the South Nyanza Region.
