Kisumu,June 2026 –The government has urged Kenya’s newest TVET graduates to embrace technology, start businesses, and keep learning beyond college, as it ramps up investment to make technical training more market-ready.
Speaking at The Kisumu National Polytechnic’s 12th graduation ceremony, Principal Secretary (PS) for TVET Dr Esther Thaara Muoria said adaptability and digital competence will define success in today’s job market.
She represented Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba at the event where 2,099 graduands received Certificates, Diplomas, and Higher Diplomas across multiple disciplines.
“The world of work is changing fast. The future belongs to graduates who are adaptable, tech-savvy, and able to create solutions to social and economic challenges,” Dr Muoria told the graduands.
She said the State is committed to strengthening TVET through modern workshops, competency-based curricula, digital skills programs, and closer industry partnerships to produce globally competitive graduates.
Dr Muoria praised Kisumu Poly for its focus on quality training, research, innovation, and partnerships, calling it one of Kenya’s leading TVET institutions for producing job-ready and self-employed graduates.
Chief Principal Ms. Catherine Kelonye congratulated the class of 2026 and urged them to carry integrity, professionalism, and resilience into their careers.
“The Polytechnic remains committed to delivering industry-driven, competency-based training that gives learners practical skills aligned to labour market needs,” Kelonye said.
She encouraged graduates to consider entrepreneurship, digital innovation, and continuous learning. She noted that TVET pathways now open doors in manufacturing, construction, agriculture, ICT, health, hospitality, and the creative economy.
Kelonye also called on employers to partner with TVET colleges through internships and job placements that give graduates hands-on experience while supporting national growth.
She highlighted the institution’s increased investment in research, modern facilities, and strategic collaborations to position TKNP as a centre of excellence.
Speaking on behalf of Governing Council Chairperson Eng. Judah Ochieng Abekah, Council Member Prof. Eng. Bernadette Sabuni commended the graduates for perseverance.
“You are now ambassadors of excellence. Use your skills to innovate, create jobs, and contribute to Kenya’s development,” Prof. Sabuni said. She pledged the Council’s commitment to stronger governance and continuous improvement of training standards.
Diploma in Accounting graduate Elsa Amani said she overcame high living costs and academic challenges to complete her studies.
“For new graduates, opportunities are not limited to formal employment,” Amani said.
“You can start skilled trade businesses, launch SMEs, pursue further studies, take industrial attachments that lead to jobs, or explore opportunities in regional and international markets where technical skills are in demand.”
The colourful graduation brought together government officials, Governing Council members, TVET leaders, development partners, industry players, parents, alumni, staff, and other guests to celebrate the graduands’ achievements.
