128 Bright, Needy Students Benefits from Nyanza Community Youth Empowerment Program

The program comes in handy to support the bright but needy students to pursue their education dream courses.

KISUMU, Kenya August 5 –The bright but needy students who sat for the Kenya Certificate of secondary Education ( KCSE) but were unable to join various learning institutions due to lack of school fees have all reasons to smile as Nyanza Community Youth Empowerment Program program has come in handy to assist pursue their education dreams.

Speaking on Wednesday, September 3rd, at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Ground Kisumu, the Program’s Director Mr Veterlis Okoth said that their journey with the students began by keenly identifying them from the different communities across Nyanza region .

“Under this program,we have been going down to look on students who sat for their KCSE and were still at home due to issues of school fees. We register, place these students through KUCCPS and ensure that they’re facilitated through HELB loans, and scholarships ,” Okoth said .

He went further noted that to note that they have partnered with various government institutions which are ready to support such students based on their situation and backgrounds .

Students pursuing different courses recruited in the September cohort, have been placed to Bumbe National Polytechnic and Rarieda Vocational Training College.

Similarly, national polytechnics such as Eldoret and Sigalagala, and Seme Technical college and Bondo Institute will admit others on Monday 8th -bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 128.

The partnered institutions have been very supportive as the parents are barely left with the obligation of paying only Sh10,000 per student for the first term and Sh5,000 for the second term. The rest is being taken care of by the program until they are done with their education throughout the session,” Okoth added .

Joseph Oduor, the Deputy Principal Administration at Rarieda Vocational Training College in Rarieda constituency,Siaya County said that there partnership which began in 2022 will ensure students who have completed school get access to TVET competency curriculum trainings. Photo Geoffrey Kasera.

“We are currently focussing on industry- aligned programs which enable them to receive enough practical skills from the industrial attachments. The dual program caters for college and industry at 50 percent respectively,” he said.

Mr Oduor remarked that for quite a long time the program has churned our several graduates -thus a game changer in the community and society at large.

Lydia Akoth, a beneficiary from Homabay County who will be pursuing civil engineering at Bumbe National Polytechnics said that she had lost hopes in education.

Her counterpart Joseph Obwire (Automotive Engineering) affirmed that the program has empowered him a lot as he is about to complete his course.
