Kisumu ODM leaders call for unity and support for Dr Oburu following Raila Odinga’s death
KISUMU, Kenya, November 4th – ODM grassroots mobilisers, opinion leaders, and shapers in Kisumu County have called on party leaders at all levels to present a unified front to avoid confusing their nationwide supporters during this period of loss.
This appeal comes in the wake of several contradictory statements made by party members in national forums since the unexpected passing of the party leader, Raila Odinga.
Recognising the nation’s ongoing mourning, the grassroots members, who have been with the 20-year-old party, urged colleagues from the national executive to lower ranks to “remain calm, loyal, disciplined, and united.”
They emphasised that honouring Raila Odinga requires more than just words; it demands action through reorganisation, deep reflection, and a renewed commitment to the party’s core values.
Reading a joint press statement by Seme East Member of County Assembly (MCA) Seth Okumu, the assembly stressed their responsibility to strengthen the party, serve the people with integrity, and protect the democratic space that Raila passionately advocated for.

They described Raila as “a visionary leader who tirelessly fought for good governance and social justice to transform our country.”
Endorsing Dr Oburu
The attendees expressed their unanimous and steadfast support for the leadership of Dr Oburu Oginga, who serves as the Siaya Senator and Chair of the Energy Committee. “He has been a steadfast figure within our movement, a man of integrity, experience, and institutional memory,” they stated. “His leadership during this challenging time will ensure stability, continuity, and the preservation of Raila’s vision for Kenya.”
They urged all party members across the country to rally behind Dr Oburu as they navigate this delicate moment with focus and unity.
While remaining open to dialogue with other aspirants, the assembly declared their commitment to support Deputy Governor Dr Matthew Owili’s candidacy for the Kisumu gubernatorial seat in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Alongside MCAs Caren Ajwang, Habil Nyasuna, Tom Onditi, and Zack Okoyo, Kisumu County Assembly Majority Whip Seth Ochieng Kanga stated that they have already begun developing a strategic roadmap aimed at securing Dr Owili’s victory as Governor and winning elective positions throughout the county for ODM.
“We will concentrate on ensuring the success of Dr Matthew Owili as the Governor of Kisumu County and aim for success at all electoral levels within the county for ODM,” emphasised the Market-Milimani Ward MCA, highlighting the accomplishments made in the last eight years under the leadership of Governor Prof Anyang Nyong’o and his deputy.
The meeting underscored that these achievements can only be maintained and built upon by someone who has been actively involved in the governance of the county. “Dr Owili believes in the vision and possesses the leadership qualities necessary to keep Kisumu thriving,” they stated.

Among other resolutions, the group agreed to fortify ODM’s structure to enhance inclusivity, transparency, and democratic participation at all levels. They committed to crafting a unified political and developmental agenda that aligns with the aspirations of the people of Kisumu County and honours Raila’s dreams.
10-Point Agenda
The meeting also reiterated the need to implement the 10-point agenda of the broad-based government envisioned by Raila Odinga, focusing on inclusivity, economic transformation, youth empowerment, healthcare, education, social justice, and devolution—core ideals that have defined ODM since its inception.
Affirming their dedication to remaining part of the broad-based government until 2027, the assembly assured that the party will engage in wide consultations to determine the way forward in response to the majority’s demands.
“When the time comes, we will convene as a party through our established structures: the National Delegates Conference (NDC), National Governing Council (NGC), National Executive Committee (NEC), and Central Management Committee to chart a path forward for the party,” they concluded.
As they poignantly stated, “The king has rested, but the crown lives on through every loyal ODM member, grassroots organiser, and Kenyan who believes in a free, fair, and just society.”
