14 Modern Markets Worth Sh800M Set for Kisumu County Traders Under ESP

Kisumu, 16th July, 2026-The national government is constructing 14 ultra-modern markets across Kisumu County under the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) to support Micro,Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), cut post-harvest losses and improve working conditions for grassroots traders.

The projects, under the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, are each designed to accommodate 300 traders and are spread across all six sub-counties.

In Mowlem, Kisumu East Sub-County, construction of a Sh58.8 million market is at 12 percent, while at Mamboleo Trading Centre, the government has set aside Sh70 million for another 300-capacity market. Designs are complete and the tender is yet to be advertised. Located along the Mamboleo-Miwani road near the Nandi and Vihiga borders, the market is expected to be a game changer for local traders.

Kisian market located in Kisumu West Sub-County is 98 percent complete at a cost of Sh58.8 million. It sits along the Kenya-Uganda corridor. Holo market in the same sub-county is also 98 percent complete with a similar Sh58.8 million budget. A Sh70 million contract for Dago market was terminated. The government says a new tender has been advertised.

Principal Secretary for Internal Security, Dr. Raymond Omollo, who is monitoring the projects, said the markets will provide a clean and conducive environment for small-scale traders.

“The aim of the government is to give our small-scale traders a place to trade with ease,” PS Omollo said.

In Muhoroni,he explained, that the market is 18 percent complete with Sh58.8 million injected. Once done, it will serve 300 traders from Kisumu and Kericho counties.  

Meanwhile in Masogo/Kibigori market, the designs are ready and Sh70 million allocated. Adverts are expected soon. Kopere market, along the Kisumu-Nandi border, Koru market and Miwani market are also at design stage. Each has Sh70 million set aside and capacity for 300 traders, and will be advertised for contractors.

Nyakwere market in Nyakach Sub-County along the Kisumu-Homa Bay border has completed designs. It will cost Sh70 million and accommodate 300 traders.

Kaloka market in Seme Sub-County is 18 percent complete at Sh63.5 million for 300 traders. A Sh70 million contract for Kombewa market was terminated and has been readvertised. Daraja Mbili market also has completed designs and Sh70 million allocated, awaiting tendering.
