Homa Bay County, September 2026 – It was all smiles and ululations at St. Alfred Alara School in Koguta Sub-location, Rachuonyo West Sub-County, Homa Bay County, as needy students received bursaries amounting to Sh672,000.
The amount will clear outstanding fee balances for day scholars, while an additional Sh500,000 will clear part of the balances owed by boarders.
The timely gesture from the Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, Dr Raymond Omollo, is aimed at cushioning parents and guardians from humble backgrounds against the biting lack of school fees.
Speaking when he delivered the bursary cheques to the school community on Thursday, Homa Bay County Commissioner Ronald Mwiwawi urged the students to appreciate the rare opportunity to transform their lives through education.
“Knowledge is power and the gateway to a prosperous future. You should continue working hard and never lose focus lest you lose the final trophy,” he advised.
As a boost to the bursaries, the County Commissioner’s office also donated food items converted to fees valued at Sh180,000 to benefit 43 students.
“We have further donated five bags of rice and five bags of beans, also to be converted to fees for vulnerable students,” Mwiwawi said.
Earlier, as part of a follow-up on school progress and mentorship, Mwiwawi held a session with the Form Four candidates who are preparing for their KCSE examinations, before addressing the entire student fraternity.
The candidates expressed optimism and commitment to posting impressive results and surpassing the set target of a mean grade of C (plain) and above.
During the open session, students requested a modern laboratory, a library and a security fence around the school – proposals Mwiwawi said have already been presented to PS Omollo for consideration.
The County Commissioner also used the opportunity to highlight major government projects including roads, water and last-mile electricity connectivity.
“This is in line with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) which aims to provide equitable development across the 47 counties irrespective of ethnic background, race, colour, religious belief or political affiliation,” he emphasized.
Beneficiary parents pledged their unwavering support for the government led by President William Ruto, acknowledging significant development witnessed in the area through the concerted efforts of PS Omollo.
As the country braces for the General Election slated for August 10, 2027, Mwiwawi urged parents to exercise their democratic rights by registering en masse as voters.
“Increased voter registration will strengthen your bargaining power at the negotiating table,” he observed.
The colourful and peaceful event was attended by the Board of Management Chairperson and members, area MCA, the Principal and staff, National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs), PTA members, parents and students.
