NAIROBI, September 2026 -The Solutions Journalism Network (SJN) has announced the six newsrooms selected for the inaugural Africa Climate Beacon Newsrooms cohort under its Climate Solutions Journalism Accelerator program.
Launched earlier this year to expand climate solutions reporting across Brazil, India and Africa, the program attracted 133 applications for the Africa cohort.
The successful newsrooms, selected through SJN’s co-implementing partner, Media for Environment, Science, Health and Agriculture (MESHA), are Social Voices (Nigeria), Media Challenge Initiative (Uganda), The Star Publications Limited (Kenya), Water Journalists Africa (Uganda), Habitat Media (Tanzania) and Zodiak Broadcasting Station (Malawi).
The cohort, which brings together diverse platforms spanning radio, TV, digital, print and emerging media, will participate in a seven-month program from September 2026 to March 2027.
The newsrooms will receive specialized training in solutions journalism, coaching from experienced climate and solutions journalism experts, and workshops on audience and community engagement and impact tracking, all designed to strengthen climate solutions storytelling.
SJN and MESHA will also provide monthly coaching sessions to help the newsrooms develop work plans and entrench solutions journalism practice across their operations.
Each newsroom will receive a story grant of USD 8,000 to support reporting on adaptive responses to climate change in their communities.
Speaking during the announcement, MESHA Chief Executive Officer Aghan Daniel said:
“Climate change is not only a story about what is going wrong; it is also a story about what is being done, what is working, and what can be learned. By equipping journalists with the skills, knowledge and networks to investigate credible climate solutions, we can strengthen public understanding, inspire action and ensure that communities across the region see themselves not only as those affected by climate change, but also as part of the solution.”
