Let’s Empower the Youth, Not Weaponise Them for Political Gains -Shadrack Okindo

KISUMU EAST, Oct 2026 – The national debate on using youths to settle political scores through incited violence and the promotion of divisive politics continues to dominate discussions, with leaders describing it as backward and a threat to future generations.

During a funeral in Kajulu on Saturday 10th, Linda Mwanainchi, Kisumu East aspirant, along with Shadrack Omondi Okindo, emphasized the importance of empowering the youth and women by supporting them in starting micro, small, and medium enterprises for sustainable livelihoods.

Okindo, from Kamrongo-Kolwa, urged young people to refrain from lawlessness and criminal activities and to focus on education and uphold the rule of law.

“It’s unfortunate to hear that other leaders from other parts of the country are empowering their youths and women; the ones from Nyanza region are more keen on arming theirs with rungus, machetes, and pangas, much to the chagrin of the locals,” he said.

Okindo commits to eradicating these acts of political intolerance once elected to the county assembly, affirming, “It will not happen under his watch, and he will bring equitable development to mashinani (grassroots).”

With his slogan Ma Marwa (This Is Ours), he highlighted his dedication to championing youth creation and employment.

“One of my first tasks is to ensure that locals are primarily employed at Kibos Sugar Company and to address the issues they have caused on River Kibos for years – we need a leader, not just a politician.”

Joining the discourse on good leadership, Okindo urged residents to elect leaders capable of providing people-centred leadership—in legislation, representation, and oversight.

“Otherwise, if we keep electing incompetent leaders to the county assembly, we will continue to lag in socio-economic development and growth.”

He also called on political actors to conduct their campaigns peacefully.

On the religious front, he urged the community to respect the clergy, who are divinely ordained to offer spiritual healing through preaching, guidance, and counselling, while politicians are responsible for advocating policies rooted in the rule of law and justice.

“As your incoming area legislator, I will ensure the clergy are supported financially to help advance God’s Kingdom,” Olwal stated.

Regarding the upcoming contest for the Kisumu East seat, he added that he will accept defeat and expects his opponents to do the same when he emerges victorious. “Whoever wins Kisumu East, I shall support them and ask that they support me in the pursuit of a just cause,” he said.
