KISUMU, 8th Nov.2026 – As the political temperature in Kisumu County continues to rise ahead of the 2027 General Election, a new wave of speculation has emerged suggesting that Deputy Governor Dr Mathew Owili has abandoned his ambition to succeed Governor Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o and is now eyeing the Kisumu Senate seat.
However, these claims are unfounded and should be treated for what they are: political rumours that should not be mistaken for an official change of political direction.
Dr Owili’s political journey has been closely intertwined with the leadership and transformation of Kisumu County since 2017. Having served alongside Governor Nyong’o for two consecutive terms, he has been part of the county’s governance structure, policy conversations and development agenda. His experience in public administration, healthcare and leadership has continued to shape his political profile.
The suggestion that he has suddenly abandoned the gubernatorial race in favour of the Senate seat raises more questions about the motivations behind the rumours than about Owili’s political ambitions.
In the competitive environment leading up to 2027, political speculation is inevitable. However, there is a difference between political analysis and deliberately presenting unverified claims as established facts.
The Governor’s race remains the bigger conversation.
For Owili, the gubernatorial question is about the future direction of Kisumu County, the continuity of development programmes and the opportunity to provide leadership in a new political chapter.
His association with the Nyong’o administration has placed him at the centre of conversations about succession, continuity and the next phase of Kisumu’s development. It is therefore unsurprising that his political intentions remain a subject of intense public discussion.
The Senate, on the other hand, is a separate political contest with its own responsibilities and leadership demands. Suggesting that Owili has shifted his attention to that seat without an official declaration risks misleading voters and distorting the political conversation.
Kisumu deserves issue-based politics, not manufactured narratives.
As the 2027 elections approach, residents should expect political conversations to focus on development priorities, healthcare, infrastructure, employment, agriculture, youth empowerment and the overall economic future of the county.
Owili’s political future should be judged through his own declarations, actions and engagement with the electorate, rather than through speculation circulating in political circles and on social media.
There is also a need for political players and commentators to exercise responsibility. Political competition should not become an excuse for manufacturing narratives intended to create confusion, weaken political positions or prematurely define the choices available to the electorate.
The people of Kisumu deserve clarity, honesty and mature political discourse.
For now, the talk that Dr Mathew Owili has dropped his gubernatorial ambition to pursue the Kisumu Senate seat should be dismissed as unsubstantiated. There has been no basis presented to support that narrative, and it should not be treated as an established political development.
The 2027 gubernatorial contest remains an important conversation in Kisumu, and Owili’s name remains central to the succession debate.
Ultimately, the people of Kisumu will have the final say on who leads them into the next chapter.
Until then, let political ambition be communicated by the individuals concerned, not determined by rumours.
The political future of Kisumu should be shaped by facts, ideas and the people’s aspirations, not speculation.
