Beware of Unscrupulous Private Recruitment Agencies, Diaspora Affairs Warns

KISUMU, Oct 2026 -The State Department for Diaspora Affairs has cautioned the youth and the general public to be on the lookout for individuals and companies masquerading as legitimate recruitment agencies offering job opportunities abroad.

Speaking during a public sensitization forum targeting the youth at the Kisumu National Polytechnic, Jennifer Wanjala of the State Department for Diaspora Affairs led the mashinani engagement dubbed ‘Kazi Majuu’ to sensitize the public and students on the availability of job opportunities abroad.

“Our department is looking forward to opening this opportunity for young people because so many graduates are churned out of our learning institutions but there are limited spaces,” she said.

She noted that the government has signed strategic and bilateral labour agreements with other governments to explore avenues and pathways through which Kenyans can tap into global opportunities.

Some of the approaches include the Mwalimu Majuu, Mhandisi Majuu, Mkulima Majuu, Muuguzi Majuu and Baharia Majuu programs, among many others.

“Our youths are resourceful and are assets to our country’s development and growth. Diaspora remittances have emerged as one of the country’s highest income earners alongside other traditional forms,” she added.

The Department urged the youth and the general public to be wary of unscrupulous private recruitment agencies.

“We have shown them how to identify the existing red flags to avoid falling prey. A person can’t just come with fictitious or briefcase agencies and purport to be recruiting for majuu,” she warned.

The Diaspora Affairs Department also called upon Kenyans to seek guidance from them whenever they get opportunities abroad, noting that it has the capacity to do due diligence together with foreign embassies and consulates.

“We will help them in ascertaining the authenticity of various opportunities they get. There are so many conmen around who are trying to deprive them of their hard-earned money,” she said.

She cautioned Kenyans against being coerced into selling precious properties such as land and cattle or taking loans, and instead urged them to utilize available labour mobility products offered through the Uwezo Fund, Youth Enterprise Fund, and KCB and Equity Banks.

The government also has a recruiter known as the Diaspora Placement Agency that facilitates labour mobility in a safe, regular and orderly manner for their benefit.

Ann Kimani, a Foreign Service officer, said they assist Kenyans virtually and through Nairobi offices in acquainting themselves with the language and culture of other countries for mutual coexistence.

“We encourage the youth to vet the right information through our websites and social media platforms. So far, the government has managed to facilitate 680,000 job opportunities through these initiatives,” she said.
