KISUMU, 6th November 2026 -The Government is scaling up investments in the blue economy to transform fishing into a profitable and sustainable venture for communities around Lake Victoria.
Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, Dr Raymond Omollo, said the government is prioritising infrastructure, equipment, training, security and market access to strengthen the fishing industry.
Speaking during an engagement with Beach Management Units (BMUs) and business community representatives in Kisumu County, Dr Omollo said President William Ruto’s administration was committed to unlocking the sector’s economic potential.
He revealed that nine modern fish landing sites were being developed along Lake Victoria, alongside piers to support fishing activities and improve water transport.
“The President has been very deliberate, very intentional. He’s doing nine fish landing sites on Lake Victoria. He’s doing piers so that beyond supporting the fishing industry, he’s also making it possible for transport by water to be safe and convenient,” he said.

Dr Omollo cited ongoing construction of Asat Landing Site, noting that the facilities would include cold storage rooms, hygienic fish-handling areas and improved trading infrastructure to reduce post-harvest losses.
On security, he announced plans to deploy additional police officers and patrol boats before the end of 2026, following consultations with the Border Patrol Unit and Kenya Coast Guard Service.
He said the interventions would strengthen lake surveillance and protect fishermen while undertaking their activities.
The PS also urged BMUs to strengthen their Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations (SACCOs) through increased membership, transparent financial management and improved governance.
He encouraged fishing households to diversify their livelihoods through alternative ventures, including poultry farming, to enhance financial resilience.
In another infrastructure announcement, Dr Omollo disclosed that President Ruto was expected to launch construction of the approximately 500-kilometre Lake Victoria Ring Road, stretching from Migori to Busia, in the coming weeks.
The road is expected to improve connectivity and facilitate transportation of goods and access to markets across lakeside communities.
He further called for increased government attention to fishing communities, arguing that the sector deserved recognition similar to coffee, tea, dairy and sugarcane farming.
On healthcare, Dr Omollo said more than 33 million Kenyans had registered with the Social Health Authority under the Taifa Care reforms.

The Interior PS was accompanied by Lang’ata MP Felix Odiwuor, alongside government officials, security officers, BMU representatives and business community members.
The planned investments are intended to strengthen the blue economy, improve livelihoods and position fishing as a key contributor to Kenya’s economic development.
