KISUMU,November 3, 2026 -Kisumu City Management has condemned attempts by private developers to grab Baby Pendo Public Recreational Park in the city centre, vowing to use all legal means to protect the public utility.
In a statement, Acting City Manager Mr Fredrick Mariwa said the city has received credible reports of unauthorized individuals attempting to claim ownership of the park.
He noted that the park was rehabilitated and trees planted by the County Government of Kisumu about four years ago, and questioned why individuals would attempt to alienate the public space now.
“This public space holds immense historical, emotional, and social significance for the residents of Kisumu. It is named in honour of Baby Pendo, who was killed by police during post-election violence in Kisumu,” Mariwa said.
“The park is a symbol of peace and justice for our community and the residents of Kisumu City.”
Mariwa stated unequivocally that Baby Pendo Park is and will remain public land.
“Any titles, leases, or subdivision documents purporting to alienate this land to private entities should be considered null and void,” he said.

“We will not sit back and watch selfish individuals strip our citizens of their right to green spaces and historical monuments.”
The City Manager warned the public against entering into any land transactions involving the property or any other public utility within the city, noting that such land-grabbing schemes will not be allowed.
He reiterated that the Kisumu City Board remains committed to the Urban Renewal Plan, which prioritizes expansion and beautification of public recreational spaces rather than their elimination.
The public has been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities around the park or other public utilities to city enforcement or the Office of the City Manager.
The Kisumu City Management,Mr Mariwa emphasized, is the body tasked with managing urban planning, public infrastructure, and delivery of essential services to ensure a sustainable, resilient, and vibrant city for all residents and visitors.
