WASHINGTON DC, USA -Kenya and the United States have signed a five-year Sh207,664,000,000 ($1.6 billion) Health Cooperation Framework to enhance the sector and ensure full realisation of the Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

President William Ruto has hailed the historic agreement which he says prioritises the supply of modern medical equipment to health facilities across the country.

“We shall experience the efficient and timely delivery of essential health commodities to our facilities, the upscaling of our health workforce, and the expansion of health insurance to ensure that every Kenyan is protected,” Dr Ruto said in his official X account.

The agreement will see financial resources being channelled directly through government institutions, and thus “eliminating third-party intermediaries.”

In this way, it will guarantee that support reaches the intended beneficiaries for maximum impact and accountability.

The Head of State also expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the US President Donald Trump-led administration for choosing Kenya as the first nation to benefit from such a Framework.

Dr Ruto: “This decision reflects growing confidence in the strength, sustainability, and reform momentum of our healthcare systems.”

He further lauded the long-standing bilateral health cooperation between which has seen a huge investment of over 7 billion for more than 25 years.

The signing ceremony was also witnessed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.

According to Rubio, Nairobi and Washington have signed a groundbreaking agreement that protects American taxpayers, empowers Kenya, and saves lives.

“We also discussed security cooperation, commercial opportunities for American businesses, and Kenya’s significant contributions to Haiti’s security,” he said.
