Kisumu Signs 3-Year Deal with Africa Urban Lab to Guide City Expansion 

KISUMU, 22nd April 2026- Kisumu City and its environs are set for a transformative Urban Expansion Plan expected to be completed in the next three decades.

This follows a signed three year collaboration and partnership agreement between the County Government of Kisumu and the African Urban Lab (AUL), to jointly undertake the initiative.

Speaking during the event, Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o said that as Kisumu expands, it will do so in a clear, organized and forward-looking way.

” If we do not plan our development, it will end up planning us as the growth of informal settlements shows us why proper planning is not a luxury but a a necessity,” Nyong’o emphasized.

The lakeside county, he further added will use data to guide its decisions, work together across different sectors and involve communities more closely. This, however, will adequately address vital issues such as land for infrastructure and sustainable financing.

Nyong’o further pointed out that in the  near future,the  partnership will help  decide how land is used in Kisumu, improve old and neglected estates. “It will also help with planning and expanding areas such as Kombewa, Bodi Kolunje Katito and Pap Onditi Municipalities.”

The function was also graced by the County Attorney Otieno Aluoka, Richard Martin a Consultant with AUL, Kurtis Lockhart the Founder and Director of AUL, former Nairobi Mayor Joe Aketch, and the signing ceremony was also witnessed by County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Lands ,Phydical Planning ,Housing and Urban Development Dr Charles K’Onyango.
