NAIROBI, 5th June 2026 –Renowned comedian Eric Omondi will spend the weekend in police cells after being denied a bond following his arrest earlier today at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
According to his advocate Babu Owino, the President of African Comedy (POCA), was apprehended at 12.45pm inside a plane while en route to Kisumu County.
“We tried to beg for him to be released on police bond but they refused,” he said during a presser held late evening.
Confirming his arrest, Omondi who also doubles up as the CEO of Big Tyme Entertainment posted on his social media platforms explaining that: “Just been arrested by a group of 8 non-uniformed men. I have no idea where we are headed.”
According to a statement released by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) they confirmed the arrest of Erick Omondi following credible intelligence connecting him with the offences committed under the guise of the recent fuel-related protests in Nairobi.
The arrests were carried out by sleuths from DCI Central, working jointly with CRIB Nairobi Region, and was taken tothe Nairobi Area Regional DCI Headquarters where he recorded a statement as he is being processed for arraignment in court on Monday.
“The arrest follows ongoing investigations in which several other suspects linked to the same incidents were previously arrested and subsequently arraigned in court on 18th May 2026,” the statement reads in part.
However, Omondi’s advocate rubbished the arrest terming the charges pressed against his client as “frivolous, fickle, limping and vexatious on a fishing expedition.”
He further revealed that one of the charges preferred against his client is that of obstructing vehicles during the past protest on fuel pump prices spike.
“This case is going nowhere, I will be there to defend him in court. The Dci officers have refused to admit him to bail. Let’s meet in court on Monday, come prepared and he will be out,” Babu Owino who is also Embakasi East sounded confident.
He added that many Kenyans had come out to protest against the fuel hikes that was called by the Matatu Operators Association (MOA). “They were annoyed and went on the streets to air their grievances.”
Babu likened the arrest to a razzmatazz of things which are infertile imagination. “It’s clear the government is trying to persecute its own people.
Earlier today, Omondi had posted that on the 6th and 7th of June Kenya will experience a divine moment. He was to attend a time of prayer for a divine Intervention for the country to be presided by Pastor Chris Oyahkilome at Kenyatta International Stadium in Mamboleo,Kisumu .
In light of the foregoing, the DCI reminds the public that, while the Constitution guarantees the right to assemble, picket, and demonstrate peacefully.
These rights, they noted, must be exercised responsibly and within the confines of the law. DCI further emphasized that any criminal acts committed under the guise of protests, demonstrations, or civic action will be investigated and dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.”
“We will not hesitate to take decisive action against anyone involved in such offences. No matter where you hide, the long arm of the law will catch up with you,” DCI warns.
