Ol Kalou,July 17th, 2026-Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) is the new Member of Parliament for Ol Kalou Constituency in Nyandarua County. His victory was officially declared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Returning Officer, Antony Njiraine, following a highly anticipated by-election.
The electoral contest, which attracted nine candidates, saw Waweru secure a landslide victory with 35,440 votes. His closest rival, Samuel Muchina Nyagah of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, who previously served as the constituency manager to the late legislator, finished a distant second with 5,450 votes.
The remaining seven candidates trailed significantly behind with Wilson Mwaniki Kigwa of the Jubilee Party receiving 198 votes, followed by Stephen Wanyoike Waithaka of the National Liberal Party (NLP) with 103 votes, and Timothy Kamau Kariuki of the Progressive Party of Kenya (PPK) with 51 votes.
Edwin Kariiri Muchiri of the Party of National Unity (PNU) secured 28 votes, Abdifatah Hussein Abdullahi of the Forum for Restoration of Democracy-Kenya (FPK) got 19 votes, Edward Mathenge Mwaniki of the Kenya National Congress (KNC) managed 16 votes, and Rachael Wangui Njoroge of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) finished with 11 votes.
According to the IEBC, 41,656 of the 73,480 registered voters cast their ballots, representing a 57% voter turnout.
“To the great people of Ol Kalou, thank you for believing in our vision and giving us such an overwhelming mandate. This victory belongs to all of us. The spirits of our forefathers are honored,” Waweru said during his acceptance speech.
“To those who supported other candidates,” he said: “I extend my respect and assure you that I will serve everyone equally, regardless of political affiliation. The campaigns are over; now the work of transforming Ol Kalou begins.”
His closest challenger, Samuel Muchina, graciously conceded defeat and wished the MP-elect success in his new role.
Waweru will succeed the late David Njuguna Kiaraho, who passed away on March 26, 2026. Kiaraho had served as the Ol Kalou MP since 2013, when he was first elected on a Jubilee Party ticket.
Political pundits view Waweru’s decisive victory as a crucial signal for how the Mt Kenya region might vote in the upcoming 2027 General Election. The result sets the stage for a fierce political battle in the region between President William Ruto, who is seeking a second term, and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, whose political influence is closely tied to the rising prominence of the DCP.
