NAIROBI, 13th January -In preparation for the 2027 General Elections, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced the resumption of Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in various constituencies, which were suspended and set to begin on Monday, 12th January 2026.
IEBC seeks to register 6 3 million new eligible voters, 70 percent of whom are youth across the country, in line with its constitutional mandate under Article 88(4) of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010. The electoral areas were suspended due to the by-elections held on 27th November, 2025.
In Gazette Notice No. 336, issued on Friday, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon listed the constituencies, including Magarini, Galole, Fafi, Banissa, Machakos Town, Turkana North, Turkana West, Samburu North, Moiben, Keiyo South, and Chesumei.
Others include Tiaty, Baringo North, Baringo Central, Baringo South, Mogotio, Eldama Ravine, Narok North, Kajiado Central, Khwisero, Kabuchai, Ugunja, Kasipul, West Mugirango, North Mugirango, Borabu and Embakasi North Constituencies.
In the last update by the commission a month ago, about 140 140,000 Kenyans had been registered during the CVR exercise, which began on 29th September, 2025. The voter registration exercise, however, has led IEBC to shift from relying on census data to the National Registration Bureau and the Directorate of Immigration Services (DIS) to achieve its targets.
To be eligible to become a voter, one must be a Kenyan aged 18 or over, possess an original national identification card (ID) or a valid Kenyan passport, and be physically present at the registration centres of their choice. Similarly, registered voters will have the opportunity to transfer their registration to a different electoral area of their choice.
“There shall be no CVR or review of voters’ rolls in Mbeere and Malava Constituencies due to ongoing election petitions,” Ethekon said.
IEBC, he says, is adopting an open-door policy and remains committed to working closely with the leadership of both houses of Parliament and all progressive Kenyans to enhance electoral processes and the voter experience.
In related developments, the electoral body is currently gearing up to conduct the upcoming by-elections, which will be held on Thursday, 26th February 2026.
They include the Member of the National Assembly for Isiolo South Constituency, as well as the Members of the County Assembly for Muminji Ward and Evurore Ward in Embu County, and West Kabras Ward in Kakamega County.
