Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were is dead.
He was slain by an assassin riding on a motorbike along Ngong Road in Nairobi city yesterday evening.
His death was confirmed by Interior PS Dr Raymond Omollo.
Hon Og’ondo died on the spot as his driver survived the attack.
Dr Omollo led a team of detectives comprising of DCI boss Mohamed Amin, and Nairobi police boss George Seda to the murder scene.
“Eyewitnesses have confirmed that a motorcycle rider and a pillion passenger stopped alongside the car. The pillion passenger approached the vehicle and fired shots on the passenger side before jumping onto the motorbike and speeding off,” an official statement released by the National Police Service reads in part.
According to reports confirmed by the Nairobi Regional Commander, states that at around 7.30pm, a white Toyota Crown vehicle came to a standstill at a red light along Ngong road, near the City Mortuary roundabout.
The driver and a male passenger, both unhurt, managed to rush the injured man to Nairobi hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga described the late Hon.Ong’ondo as a gallant son of the soil.
“Hon Charles Ong’ondo Were is no more; mercilessly and in cold blood, gunned down by an assassin in Nairobi this evening,” he eulogised in his official Facebook account.
According to his ODM party, the legislator left the National Assembly at 6.15pm after participating in the business of the day.
They have called on police to carry out speedy investigations into the shooting incident and bring the culprits to book.
“We shall issue a comprehensive statement in due course,” says ODM.
The legislator’s body is currently lying at Nairobi Hospital.
Investigations are currently ongoing on his murder.
