Kenya’s Standard newspaper did not publish front page announcing Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna’s presidential bid
IN SHORT: A front page that appears to be from the Kenyan daily claims that Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna has announced his presidential bid ahead of the 2027 general elections. But the front page is fabricated.
An image circulating on social media appears to show the front page of Kenya’s Standard newspaper with the headline: “Kenya decides, Sifuna it is.”
The purported front page features a photo of Nairobi senator and former Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) secretary general Edwin Sifuna.
It is dated 8 August 2024 and has the cover line: “Sifuna declares presidential intent, vows to unite Kenyans and deliver real change. Story on page 6.”
Sifuna has emerged as one of Kenya’s most prominent opposition politicians due to his outspoken political commentary, frequent media appearances and criticism of government policies.
Following the 2024 Gen Z-led protests against increased taxation, his public profile grew further, with many young Kenyans viewing him as one of the more vocal figures advocating for political accountability and generational change.
He was removed as ODM secretary general in 2026 following internal party disputes. From there, he joined the Linda Mwananchi movement, which describes itself as a political initiative aimed at promoting accountable leadership and protecting citizens’ interests.
Sifuna’s involvement with the movement has fuelled speculation that he could seek the presidency in 2027, but he has not announced such a bid.
The cover, however, claims he has now done so and he is a frontrunner. It has also been posted here, here and here. But is it genuine? We checked.
Fake front page
The first red flag is the date.
At the time of writing in 2026, the purported newspaper edition is dated 8 August 2024. At that point, the Linda Mwananchi movement had not yet been formed, and there was no public speculation about Sifuna running for president in the 2027 general election.
We also checked the Standard’s e-paper archive. The genuine front page for 8 August 2024 carried the headline: “Cabinet to hit road after rubber-stamp.” This was after the reconstitution of president William Ruto’s Cabinet after the tax protests.
No subsequent cover has carried the Sifuna headline.
The circulating image does not match the newspaper’s authentic front page and was not published by the Standard.
