Kondele Market Traders Set to Share Over Sh3M through 81 Registered Groups

KISUMU, 6th January –Hundreds of small-scale traders at Kisumu’s Kondele Market have begun receiving business empowerment funds following the release of money raised during a high-profile fundraiser held late last year.

The funds, raised through an initiative led by Kisumu Central MP Joshua Odongo Oron, are intended to help traders rebuild and expand their businesses amid persistent economic pressures and losses linked to recurring street protests in the area.

Speaking during the cheque distribution exercise at the Kondele market on Tuesday, Kondele Market chairman Leonard Omollo said traders would share more than Sh3 million, disbursed through 81 registered groups.

“This money is meant to strengthen businesses at the grassroots. Even a small addition to your capital can make a big difference in daily trade,” Omollo said.

The fundraiser, held in November 2025, brought together political leaders and traders from Kondele and Kibuye markets.

Omollo dismissed claims that the funds had been misappropriated, saying delays were administrative rather than political.

“There has been misinformation that the MP disappeared with the money. That is false. The delay was due to procedures required before disbursement,” he said.

Kondele Market General Secretary Isaiah Okoth said the traders’ share amounted to Sh3.3 million and expressed confidence that the funds would have a tangible impact.

“Our businesses are often disrupted whenever protests erupt in this area. This support will help traders stabilise and grow despite those challenges,” Okoth said.

Women traders welcomed the initiative, saying it offered relief to families that depend entirely on small businesses for survival.

“This support gives us hope. Many women here are single parents, and expanding our businesses means better lives for our children,” said one trader, who is a member of a beneficiary group.

Kibuye traders are expected to receive their portion of the funds on Thursday, January 8, 2026.

MP Oron said the empowerment drive was aimed at promoting unity and economic resilience among traders.

“When traders work together, real transformation happens. This initiative is about restoring dignity and opportunity to our business community,” he said.

The empowerment program comes amid growing political interest in Kisumu County ahead of the 2027 elections, with MP Oron widely viewed as a potential contender for the gubernatorial seat.
