EMBAKASI, Nairobi July 17 – Nairobi residents are set to enjoy enhanced road connectivity by the end of the year as the national government, in collaboration with the Nairobi City County, embarks on a comprehensive Sh2.1 billion road improvement initiative spanning 62 kilometres across the capital.
The announcement was made during the official inauguration of the newly completed Savanna-Stage 17 Bridge in Soweto, where President William Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja reaffirmed their shared commitment to delivering the project by December 2025.
The initiative is part of an ongoing partnership between the two levels of government aimed at transforming Nairobi’s infrastructure landscape.
Key Areas
The extensive rehabilitation and construction programme will target multiple high-traffic zones across the city, with Embakasi constituencies receiving the largest allocation.
The breakdown includes: Starehe & Kamukunji (7.9 kilometres) of new roads, Kasarani & Roysambu (7.9 kilometres) of upgraded roads, and Westlands(4.9 kilometres) of road improvements.

Dagoretti and Lang’ata, and surrounding areas will undergo significant upgrades under the plan.
Embakasi (South, Central, East, West) will get the largest portion of the project, 24 kilometres of roadworks.
Infrastructure Development
Speaking at the event, President Ruto reiterated his administration’s dedication to enhancing Nairobi’s road network in collaboration with county leadership.
“We shall continue partnering with the Nairobi County Government to improve roads and infrastructure. It is our collective responsibility to ensure every road is completed to the highest standard,” President Ruto stated.
Governor Sakaja, who joined the President at the Soweto event, highlighted the swift completion of the Savanna-Stage 17 Bridge as proof of the government’s ability to deliver on its promises.
“A few months ago, this very road was completely impassable. Today, thanks to the President’s commitment, the Savannah-Stage 17 Bridge is fully operational.Similarly, in Embakasi East, critical roads such as Aviation Road to Fedha and Gate B Road will be finalised within three weeks,” Sakaja said as he assured that: “This is just the beginning—many more roads across all 17 constituencies will be upgraded in the coming months.”
December Deadline
County officials confirmed that the entire roadworks programme is on track to meet its December 2025 deadline.
Once completed, the upgrades are expected to significantly ease traffic congestion, improve mobility, and stimulate economic activity by enhancing connectivity across Nairobi.
The joint national-county effort underscores a unified approach to addressing the city’s infrastructure challenges, with both leaders pledging sustained cooperation to ensure timely and quality delivery.
