PSG Retain UEFA Champions League Crown After Dramatic 4-3 Shootout Against Arsenal

BUDAPEST, May 2026 -Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have retained their UEFA Champions League trophy, defeating Arsenal 4-3 in a nerve-wrecking penalty shootout at a rocking Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary.

In front of a captivated 61,035-strong crowd on Saturday 30th, it was Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes who proved to be the ultimate difference-maker in the shootout.

His missed effort, which sailed agonizingly over the bar, extended the Gunners’ historic continental final jinx. Earlier in the shootout, teammate Eberechi Eze had also fired off-target.

PSG converted their penalties with clinical precision through Goncalo Ramos, Desire Doué, Achraf Hakimi and Lucas Beraldo. Arsenal’s hawkish goalkeeper David Raya did give the English champions hope by brilliantly saving Nuno Mendes’ effort, while Victor Gyokeres, Declan Rice, and Gabriel Martinelli all successfully converted for the Gunners. However, it wasn’t enough to deny the French giants.

The pulsating encounter burst into life in just the sixth minute. Arsenal capitalised on a costly error from PSG captain Marquinhos, whose mistimed pass deflected off Leandro Trossard and bounced perfectly into the path of Kai Havertz. The prolific German striker outpaced his markers before unleashing a ferocious, left-footed screamer that whizzed past Matvey Safonov into the back of the net.

Despite dominant possession, the 2025/26 Ligue 1 champions found themselves continually frustrated by a well-drilled, indefatigable Arsenal backline anchored by Gabriel, William Saliba, and Piero Hincapié.PSG’s relentless pressure finally paid off in the 65th minute. Arsenal defender Christian Mosquera was adjudged to have brought down Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the box.

Ousmane Dembele stepped up to the spot, coolly converting the penalty to restore parity.Kvaratskhelia came inches from winning it outright in the 87th minute, but his rasping shot rattled the post. With the game tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes, a tense, grueling 30 minutes of extra time followed, with both sides squandering precious opportunities before the referee blew for penalties.

An ecstatic Luis Enrique couldn’t hide his emotions after the final whistle: “I’m mixed with excitement, fatigue, and everything. But this is the best moment of the season. We are still champs-two in a row, it’s amazing.”

In the 71-year history of Europe’s elite competition, Luis Enrique’s side became the first team to successfully defend their title since Spain’s Real Madrid’s record from 2016 to 2018.

PSG also became only the second club to accomplish the double feat in the modern Champions League era (1993 onwards). The historic victory follows their emphatic 5-0 demolition of Inter Milan in Munich to lift the 2024/25 trophy.

The Arsenal men’s team has never won the Uefa Champions League, while their women counterparts lifted the trophy in 2007.

The 2025/26 UEFA Champions League featured a staggering total prize fund of €2.467 billion. As the ultimate victors, PSG walk away with the €25 million winner’s prize (Sh3,768,250,000 billion), while Arsenal take home a consolation prize of €18.5 million as runners-up.

The financial rewards trickled down through the entire tournament, with the semifinalists being awarded €15 million, quarterfinalists taking home €12.5 million, the Round of 16 teams securing €11 million, and the knockout round play-offs participants each receiving €1 million.
