Governor Nyong’o hosts UN delegation, unveils plans for green housing, slum upgrades, and lakeside development
KISUMU, Kenya – Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o held high-level talks with a UN-Habitat delegation led by Ms Beryl Khanyile, Head of the Kenya Country Programme, to strengthen collaboration on urban development and affordable housing initiatives in the county.
The discussions focused on the Partnership for the Implementation of the New Urban Agenda (PINUA 1), a key project aimed at fostering inclusive, green, and resilient urbanisation in Kisumu.
The agreement will bolster Green incremental housing co-production, Participatory slum upgrading in informal settlements and Cooperative social rental housing schemes.
Inside details also include offers such as Affordable housing financing solutions, and Lakefront development to revitalise Kisumu’s economy.
Speaking at City Hall yesterday, Governor Nyong’o emphasised the county’s commitment to closing the financing gap in social housing while improving living conditions in existing neighbourhoods.
“This project will first roll out in Shauri Moyo and Shauri Yako estates in Muhoroni Municipality,” he said, adding that the initiative aligns with the vision of a people-driven, modern lakeside city.
A public participation forum will soon be held in Muhoroni to gather residents’ input on the planned upgrades.
The Governor also highlighted ongoing efforts to reposition Kisumu as a lake-facing economic hub, stating, “We explored strategies to fully harness the potential of our lakeside location.”
The meeting was attended by County Executive Committee Members (CECMs); Dr Charles Konyango (Land), and Salmon Orimba (CECM), and high-ranking officials from UN-Habitat and Kisumu County Government.
With rapid urbanisation and biting housing shortages, Ms Khanyile-led delegation emphasised that the initiative will set a benchmark for sustainable city growth, affordable homes, and community-led development in Kenya.
