Uasin Gishu,August 2026-The County Government of Uasin Gishu has made significant strides in road and other infrastructure development programs, with over 1,200 kilometres of roads graded and more than 300 kilometres graveled in the just concluded 2025-2026 financial year, the County Executive Member for Roads(CECM), Eng. Abraham Serem, has said.
“Governor Jonathan Bii has given adequate resources. We have a big task ahead to ensure every part of the county is connected,” CECM Serem stated.
Serem said the devolved unit has also delivered over 30 bridges and box culverts across the county.
The county has allocated a grand total of Sh415 million for flagship road projects in the 2026/2027 financial year.
“The goal is to make major strides in improving livelihoods, boosting the economy, and driving sustainable development through quality infrastructure,” Governor Bii said.
The funds are expected to boost the construction of new bridges and box culverts, and enhance the tarmacking of at least 1 kilometre of roads in each of the new municipalities of Cheramei, Moi’s bridge, Ziwa, Kesses, Moiben and Burnt Forest. Drainage works in previously marginalized areas along ward borders are also part of the plan.
Serem and roads Chief Officer Geoffrey Tanui outlined further milestones for FY 2025/2026. Through framework contracts, the department delivered 489.5 kilometres of grading and 316.99 kilometres of graveling within two months-a model he termed highly effective.
They added that other projects being delivered through collaboration with the National Youth Service and in-house programs have achieved 52% completion.
In another major boost, the county is establishing a new asphalt processing plant in Eldoret City. Governor Dr Jonathan Bii said the plant is 94% complete and will support his plan to tarmac several kilometres of roads in Eldoret and the six new municipalities.
“The plant is expected to improve efficiency, reduce road construction costs by 50%, and produce more durable roads. My administration has also enhanced transportation and pedestrian safety through the installation of traffic lights on major streets,” Governor Bii said.
The plant is provided for in the County Integrated Development Plan 2023-2027 and aligns with Pillar VI of Governor Bii’s manifesto on Infrastructure Development and Public Works.
The county has also decongested Eldoret town with a new bus park serving matatu Saccos plying the Eldoret-Langas route and other eastern routes, alongside the ongoing renovation of the Iten-Chepkoile bus park.
Matatu operators led by John Chepkonga and Enock Toroitich commended the county for renovating the Eldoret Main Bus Park.
“We don’t have a better way to thank Governor Bii. During heavy rains our vehicles and passengers had to wade through muddy potholes. This renovation will bring reprieve,” Chepkonga said.
Other completed urban works include tarmacking of Bandaptai Road, paving of Farmers Street in Eldoret City, and tarmacking of roads in Mwanzo, Shauri, Maili Nne and Kipkaren estates.
Beyond roads, Chief Officer Geoffrey Tanui said the county has upgraded the Fire and Rescue Department by commissioning two 16,000-litre water bowsers capable of drawing water from open sources.
