KISUMU, Kenya –The local creative industry is poised for major transformation following the announcement of a strategic partnership between the US Embassy and the County Government of Kisumu.
This collaboration aims to harness the potential of the region to attract foreign direct investment while also empowering youth and women.
“Of great significance, it will enhance infrastructure development, offer tax incentives and training opportunities.”
Speaking during an engagement forum, US Deputy Chief of Mission Carla Benini emphasised the need for smart and advanced facilities to enhance local talent training.
“This would be key to attracting major US-based creative production houses and investors. We are laser-focused on convening, connecting, and supporting regions like Kisumu, which are rich in potential,” Benini stated as she led a high-level delegation meeting with Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr. Matthew Owili at City Hall earlier today.

Ambassador Benini further mentioned, “We need to establish the right building blocks to motivate and empower Kenya’s creative landscape, particularly in Kisumu.”
She praised the administration of Governor Prof. Anyang Nyong’o for its tireless efforts towards improving local talent industries, digital innovations, and agricultural practices.
Dr. Owili highlighted their commitment to nurturing youth talent and creating an environment conducive to creative growth.
“Kisumu is home to rich talent. Our youth simply require platforms and tools to convert their creativity into sustainable livelihoods,” he said.
He noted that the county hosts several innovation hubs where over 200 software developers are trained to meet growing international demands.
This, however, Dr Owili stressed the urgent need for modern equipment and training in areas such as film set design, lighting, and production management.
Fish farming boost
In aquaculture, Dr. Owili stated that plans are underway to robustly develop caged fish farming to increase export capacity from the Lake Victoria basin.
“We are positioning Kisumu as a key player in sustainable fish production. We have significantly invested in strategically constructing landing sites and cold storage to enhance the county’s export readiness.”

The envoy further lauded the comprehensive measures implemented to increase security patrols aimed at addressing cross-border crimes in the Lake Victoria region.
The recently commissioned Joint Operations Centre in Kisumu, with support from the US State Department, is designed to foster greater collaboration among law enforcement agencies across the East African Community.
