KISUMU, Kenya – Human rights activists in Kisumu have called for peaceful demonstrations on Wednesday, June 25, to commemorate the first anniversary of the Gen Z-led uprising against the 2024 Finance Bill and the high cost of living.
Citing Articles 1 and 3 of Kenya’s 2010 Constitution, the organizers urged residents especially the youth to join them in exercising their democratic rights.
They also called on police to provide adequate security to deter criminals or politically hired goons who might scuttle their mission.
Demand for Justice
During a press briefing at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Grounds, the activists demanded government compensation for victims of police brutality during last year’s nationwide protests.
Led by community organizers Willy Otiende, Steven Magero, Dick Orongo, Joseph Otieno, and Boniface Akatch, the group issued a stern warning: ”If you’re coming to disrupt our peaceful maandamano, stay home. We seek justice, not violence or destruction of properties.”
They have further vowed to honour protesters killed during the demonstrations, stating:
“We will remember our fallen heroes because they fought for the common mwananchi, and we will safeguard their legacy.”
Serve Petitions
The protesters will gather at Kondele Flyover by 8 AM before marching to Kisumu’s Central Business Districts.
Participants are asked to carry Kenyan flags, white handkerchiefs, and masks as they will submit petitions to the police, DCI, DPP, IPOA and the County Commissioner’s Office.
“Failed System”
The activists accused the government of ignoring the struggles of mama mbogas, and ordinary citizens while favouring the elite.
“The system that is supposed to protect us has failed to listen to us. Instead some of us have been killed through extrajudicial executions and they demand our silence,” they said, referencing recent deaths like: Albert Ojwang’ who died in police custody, Boniface Kariuki-shot while selling masks during Nairobi protests recently.
They also called on women leaders to help end systemic injustices, reiterating that they will remain resolute “until we get the Kenya we deserve.”
“If you are obedient then know that that obedience has led to the death of millions across the world. You’re better safe if you aren’t obedient to a rogue regime,” they concluded.
