MCK Defends LSK President Faith Odhiambo Against Unwarranted Media Attacks Following Presidential Appointment

NAIROBI, Kenya, August 8th-The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has strongly condemned the unwarranted and unjustified media attacks targeting the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President, Ms. Faith Odhiambo, and other individuals for their acceptance of appointments to the Presidential Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Protests and Riots.

In a press statement released on Sunday, 7th September, and signed by Chief Executive Officer David Omwoyo, the MCK praised the media’s commitment to democracy and truth, even amidst challenging circumstances.

He highlighted that journalists have faced brutal attacks during protests, yet no perpetrators have been held accountable, despite their identification.

“In trials of police officers accused of killing Kenyans, journalists bravely provided vital evidence under oath. A conviction would reflect their courage. Suggesting the media should have refused to testify is an absurdity that undermines their pursuit of justice,” Omwoyo stated.

He expressed confusion and concern regarding the vilification of Ms. Odhiambo, emphasising that it is profoundly perplexing and hypocritical for some media outlets to attack her for accepting a position aimed at public service.

When an institution like the LSK criticises government actions but declines an invitation to help address them, it risks becoming a rebel without a cause. By insisting that the LSK President reject the appointment, these outlets are limiting the LSK to mere criticism, ignoring its crucial role in improving governance from within,” Omwoyo remarked.

It is important to note that members of the LSK currently hold leadership positions in key public institutions, including the Judiciary, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Attorney General’s Office, and the Media Complaints Commission.

Decisions made by these individuals are frequently perceived as government actions.

“To demand that Ms. Odhiambo reject her appointment is an illogical demand; it is tantamount to calling for all LSK members in public service to resign and focus solely on criticising the government. Such a stance is neither logical nor constructive; it undermines the very fabric of collaborative progress,” Omwoyo stated.

While acknowledging the media’s undeniable right to critique government actions and hold those in authority accountable, Omwoyo expressed that condemning Ms. Odhiambo for an anticipated failure, even before she has begun her work, is not only premature but also cynical, counterproductive, and nearly sadistic.

He added that when the media yields to the pressure of mob justice, it becomes the greatest betrayer of its own independence and objectivity, thereby eroding public trust and violating the principles it claims to uphold.

Omwoyo urged the media to allow the LSK President to serve on the Presidential Panel and contribute to the reparation of victims, calling for fairness, objectivity, and restraint in reporting on this matter.

Let us not prejudge or vilify those who choose to serve the nation in good faith. Instead, let us unite in supporting efforts that promote justice, accountability, and national healing,” he said.

This statement follows the Standard Media Group’s publication, through their Standard Newspaper, which featured the front-page story titled “LOSING FAITH” on Saturday.
