ODM Approves Dr Oburu Oginga As the New Party Leader

MOMBASA, Kenya-Siaya Senator Dr Oburu Oginga has been confirmed as the new Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader following a special National Governing Council (NGC) meeting held in Mombasa on Thursday, November 12th.

Dr Oburu, who has been holding fort in an acting capacity since the untimely passing of his party’s leader, the late Raila Odinga, was approved alongside his three deputies, Governors Abdulswammad Shariff Nassir (Mombasa), Paul Simba Arati (Kisii), and Senator Godfrey Osotsi (Vihiga).

In a significant move ahead of the marking of the party’s 20th anniversary, the NGC also approved the appointment of Homabay Governor Gladys Wanga as the National Chairperson, deputised by Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo and Dr John Ariko Namoit.

Other confirmed new office bearers include Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi (National Organising Secretary), Kisumu Woman Rep, Ruth Odinga (Deputy Organising Secretary) and Kisumu West MP Rosa Buyu (Secretary for Political Affairs). The Dr Oburu-led team will assume office subject to ratification by the National Delegates Convention (NDC).

Later during the event, advocate Jackson Awele administered the oath of office for the new-look team as was witnessed by lawyers James Orengo, Tom Kajwang and Tony Moturi.

As founding members of the Chungwa Party in 2005, President William Ruto, Uhuru Kenyatta (retired), Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Najib Balala, and its former Chairman Henry Kosgey, amongst other invited guests, are expected to grace the hallmarks of the occasion on Saturday 15th at the Mama Ngina Waterfront, Mombasa.

With a clarion call for unity and resilience renting the air, the delegates expressed their confidence that the new officials will steer the Orange Party forward to greater heights of prosperity.

“With renewed vision, vigour, unity of purpose, and steadfast commitment to democracy under the visionary leadership of its founding father, Raila Odinga,” they concluded.
