NYATIKE, Migori County –The national government has rolled out an ambitious revitalisation works on the Lower Kuja Irrigation Project in Nyatike, Migori County, in a wider concerted effort to strengthen food security and promote the country’s agricultural productivity.
To achieve this, the ongoing project seeks to transform the once vast, underutilized swampland into fertile and high-yielding farmlands that contribute significantly to the country’s food basket.
From the inlet of Lower Kuja, a main water distributory channel has been constructed to serve about 19,000 acres.
Interior Security and National Coordination Permanent Secretary, PS Dr. Raymond Omollo, has assured that the ongoing works are ensuring full operationalization of the scheme.
“At 11C extension in Owiro and Sayote, farmers are passionately cultivating with positive harvesting yields of between 30 to 35 bags of rice per acre in these areas,” Dr. Omollo said.

With these new developments, the farmers have diversified to premium rice varieties such as Kwamboka and Basmati, as they shelved the previous IR type.
“The new rice varieties promise higher market value and improved incomes for local households.”
