Nairobi, May 2026 –President William Ruto has emphasized that the era of traditional aid is being replaced by a framework of “sovereign equity” and strategic co-investment.
Speaking during the Africa Forward Summit held at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC), he spotlighted the summit’s role as a catalyst for a new age of African self-reliance.
Co-chaired by the French President Emmanuel Macron, the event sought to redefine the continent’s economic and diplomatic trajectory.
President Ruto stated: “The times before us demand strong cooperation, renewed multilateralism and partnerships grounded not in hierarchy, but mutual respect and shared responsibility.”
It is in this spirit, he added, that they convened this summit in our shared conviction that: ” Enduring partnerships must not be built on dependence but on sovereign equity, not on aid or charity but mutually beneficial investments, and not on extraction or exploitation but on win-win engagements.”
The summit outlined several non-negotiable priorities for the continent’s long-term growth such as Financial Reform for domestic resource mobilization and a complete overhaul of the international financial architecture.
“Infrastructure and Connectivity to enhance transport, logistics, and digital networks across borders, and Green Industrialization for transitioning to sustainable energy and fostering eco-friendly manufacturing,” the leaders stated.
They also emphasized on youth and innovation by investing in skills development, entrepreneurship, and AI-driven economic shifts.

Underscoring a unified continental front, the summit brought together over 20 African Heads of State and global leaders, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
President Ruto also made it clear that the outcomes of the Nairobi summit must move beyond rhetoric into actionable results.
“Africa is not waiting to be invited to the future,” Ruto declared while adding the continent is building that future now together with friends and partners.
“From Nairobi, we send a clear message to the world: Africa is ready to lead, partner, and shape a more balanced and prosperous future,” he concluded
