Babu Owino: My Life Is In Danger

Hon Robert Alai became aggressive, pushed me, drew a pistol, and struck me on the chest and jaw with it,” Babu Owino says.

NAIROBI, 4th January-Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has raised an alarm over his safety, detailing a violent confrontation in which he claims Kileleshwa Ward MCA Robert Alai assaulted him with a firearm at a popular Kilimani restaurant on Saturday.

In a tell-it-all statement posted across his official social media channels, the legislator described the incident as part of a “sustained campaign of violence” targeting him due to his anti-government stance. He alleged that Alai, without provocation, drew a pistol and struck him in the chest and jaw in full view of other patrons.

Babu connected the attack to what he termed a “clear pattern of physical harassment, threats and attacks” that began after the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.”

Kenyans will recall that goons were organised by the Government to attack me during that burial in Siaya, a threat that I braved due to the love I had for Baba,” the legislator stated.

According to Babu’s account, he had driven himself to a meeting with a clergyman friend at a restaurant along Lenana Road, having released his security detail for the holidays. After the brief meeting which lasted twenty minutes, he approached a nearby table to greet acquaintances, which included MCA Alai.

“Without provocation, he accused me of being behind alleged social media attacks on his wife,” Babu narrated, as he continued, “I calmly explained that I do not know his wife. It is not my style to advance my politics by attacking women.”

The lawmaker claims his attempts to defuse the situation failed. “Hon. Alai became aggressive, pushed me, drew a pistol, and struck me on the chest and jaw with it.”

After a brief de-escalation, Babu alleged Alai again turned hostile, throwing a glass of water in his face before the MP left to report the incident at Kilimani Police Station. Babu has called on the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation.

I take this incident very seriously. It was an unprovoked attack on my person, motivated by my political stand, and constituted a clear threat to my life,” he said.

“As leaders, we are expected to set an example. However, our calm should never be mistaken for fear. We will always stand our ground in defence of our lives, our dignity, and the rule of law,” Babu said.

At the time of publication, MCA Robert Alai had not publicly responded to or acknowledged the allegation as the matter is now before the police.
