MIGORI, February 28th –Residents of Migori County have been urged to maintain peace and reject political violence as the country prepares for the 2027 General Election.
Principal Secretary for Interior and National Administration Raymond Omollo made the appeal on Saturday during a meeting with opinion leaders and elected representatives at Masara village in Suna West.
He said political tolerance and unity are essential in protecting the democratic gains Kenya has achieved over the years.
Omollo noted that Migori has in the recent past experienced incidents of political hooliganism, warning that such actions risk dividing communities and slowing development.
“We must shun violence and embrace peaceful coexistence despite our political differences. Democracy allows everyone to have their opinion, but it does not allow us to attack one another,” said Omollo.
The PS emphasised that political competition should not turn into hostility, urging residents to respect leaders and aspirants across the political divide.
He said disagreements should be resolved through dialogue and the ballot, not confrontation.
His remarks come at a time when the county is witnessing heightened political activity ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial race.
Governor Ochilo Ayacko has recently faced political criticism from a section of local Members of Parliament who are positioning themselves for the next election.
Omollo described political attacks and intolerance as setbacks to democratic progress, saying they undermine the rule of law and weaken institutions.
“Political hostility is a drawback to the democracy we have worked hard to build as a country. Leaders and supporters alike must exercise restraint and uphold the rule of law,” he said.
The PS also used the occasion to encourage residents to prepare adequately for the upcoming polls by ensuring they have proper identification documents.
He asked locals to take advantage of the ongoing free national identification card issuance and to register as voters with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
According to Omollo, active civic participation is the most effective way for citizens to shape their political future.
“Instead of engaging in political fights, let us ensure we have our IDs and voter cards ready. The ballot is the most powerful tool citizens have in a democracy,” he said.

As the 2027 General Election approaches, Omollo expressed confidence that the Nyanza region will support President William Ruto for a second term, citing ongoing development projects across the country.
He added that the region remains firmly anchored in the broad-based government arrangement that was supported by the late Raila Odinga.
He urged leaders across the political spectrum to prioritise unity and development over personal ambitions, saying peace is essential for economic growth and social stability.
