Ghanaian Charles Akonnor Appointed Gor Mahia’s New Head Coach

NAIROBI, Kenya August 1 –Gor Mahia FC have officially signed Ghanaian Charles Akonnor as their new head coach for a period of two years.

The 51-year-old takes the helm of Kogalo from Accra Athletic FC where he has been serving since 2024.

The former Ghana Black Stars tactician replaces Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno, who was relieved of his duties along with his technical bench after a trophyless 2024/25 campaign.

“We are glad to announce the appointment of Charles Akonnor. The ex-Ghana Black Stars manager brings a wealth of experience. Both as a top-level player and a seasoned tactician, making him the ideal leader to guide us into a new era of success,” the club said in a statement.

In his chequered coaching career, Akonnor previously took charge of clubs such as Sekondi Eleven Wise, Dreams (2012), Ashanti Gold(2017/2018), and Asante Kotoko.

He registered a remarkable progress with the national team by guiding them to the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in 2021.

Under his watch, Akonnor also oversaw the Black Stars post four wins, two draws and two losses in the FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers.

Joining Akonnor will be fellow Ghanaian Kobi-Mensah Bismark as Assistant Coach, Ben Owu as goalkeeper coach, and former Nairobi City Star’s Brian Odongo as team doctor.
