Govt Allocates Sh26B To Enhance Education Outcomes

The Ministry of Education has set aside Sh26 billion to improve the sector’s outcomes.

To achieve UNESCO’s teacher-to-learner ratio of 1:45, Sh2.4 billion will be spent on recruiting an additional 20,000 intern teachers with effect from January 2026.

In the last two years, President William Ruto-led administration has recruited 76,000 teachers to improve the quality of teaching and learning in various schools.

This added the much-needed impetus, as the number of recruited teaching staff was at 116,000 in 2022.

According to teachers’ union officials, in a single classroom, most teachers are handling over 100 tutors.

Teachers Service Commission (TSC) reports that the number of teachers now stands at 413,653, a steadying rise from 311,665 in 2015.

During the Labour Day celebrated on Thursday, May 1st, President Ruto further announced that teachers’ Capacity Building and Promotions would cost Sh1.2 billion and Sh1 billion, respectively.

To tackle teachers’ promotions and 178,881 unresolved issues, the employer’s body needs Sh35.4 billion

This is reported in the latest edition of the TSC biennial booklet (Image).

Speaking during the commissioning of a 750-capacity dormitory at Nyakach Girls High School, Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Hon.Julius Ogamba said that all these investments are expected to post good results in the education sector.

“In the course of this week, the Ministry will release Sh21B Capitation Funds to all public schools for the second term,” he assured.

The new facility, CS Ogamba added will ease congestion in the boarding section.

Through enrollment of the first cohort of Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) next year, the school is set to surpass its current 2,858 number of students.

“It is a major achievement in the context of 100 percent transition to Senior school as espoused by the government.”

Nyakach Girls achieved a mean of C+ (7.1) in the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education(KCSE).

This enabled most learners to qualify to pursue a college education, including TVET.

Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr Mathews Owili has been performing well academically for several years.

“As government, we are actively engaging the national administration and education stakeholders to mobilize increased funding for learning institutions,” he said.

This, he noted, will go a long way in modernizing and upgrading their infrastructure.

CS Ogamba was accompanied by the School Principal, Dr. Millicent Alaka, the Board of Management led by Ruth Okowa, and a host of local leaders.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to continue stakeholder engagement and collaboration to improve the sector.
