Kalonzo Accuses Govt of Blocking Azimio Leadership Changes

He says the move is a threat to the NADCO 10-point Agenda, which he co-chaired

WASHINGTON DC, 7th February – Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has accused the government of interfering in the publication of Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition’s leadership changes in the Kenya Gazette.

In a post on X, the former Vice President, currently on a US tour, said the move undermines the NADCO’s 10-point Agenda on “Fidelity to the law on multiparty democracy.”

Kalonzo warned that Azimio will pursue legal avenues to ensure their leadership is gazetted. He stressed that the new office bearers were legally appointed and the changes accepted by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties, and were widely published in the local dailies.

The facts are simple: Philip Kisia (Executive Director), Caroli Omondi (Secretary General), and I, Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka (Party Leader) were legally appointed,” Kalonzo said. “They have instructed the Government Printer to block the publications which were scheduled on Friday, February 6, 2026.”

Kalonzo questioned the government’s intentions, saying if it can block publication of legally constituted leadership, “it’s not just Azimio under attack, it’s Kenya’s multiparty democracy itself.”

He criticised President William Ruto’s administration for using state machinery to weaken the opposition parties and coalitions, saying democracy can’t function when those in power manipulate rules to silence dissent.

“I co-chaired those talks in good faith, believing we were building consensus on strengthening Kenya’s democratic institutions. Yet here we are, watching the same administration undermine the very principles we agreed upon,” Kalonzo decried.

The Azimio Coalition made top hierarchy changes on Wednesday, 4th February, chaired by former President Uhuru Kenyatta. In accepting the new role which was previously held by the late ODM leader Raila Odinga, Kalonzo had emphasised that Azimio will represent the hopes of millions who believe in justice, inclusivity, and a Kenya that works for everyone.

We welcome other like-minded individuals and parties to join us as the government in waiting,” he said.
