Kalonzo Slams ‘Illegal, Reckless’ Sale of Govt’s Safaricom Stake Ahead of Court Ruling

NAIROBI, July 3, 2026 –Wiper Patriotic Front Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has strongly criticized the government’s rushed decision to sell its stake in Safaricom PLC before the High Court delivers a ruling on a pending constitutional petition.

According to Kalonzo the National Treasury and Economic Planning okayed the disposal of the Government’s 15% stake to Vodacom almost immediately after the lifting of conservatory orders.

Terming the transaction illegal, reckless, and a blatant affront to the rule of law, Musyoka noted that the sale was concluded under a cloud of unresolved constitutional questions, despite the matter having been fully heard and a judgment expected imminently (within a week).

Speaking during a media briefing, the former Vice President questioned the urgency with which the government moved to dispose of such a strategic national asset, emphasizing Safaricom’s role as the backbone of Kenya’s digital economy.

”Safaricom supports payments, communication systems, businesses, public services, and the daily lives of millions of Kenyans,” Musyoka emphasized, warning that hasty decisions involving critical infrastructure risk compromising both national security and economic stability.

Musyoka further raised red flags over the valuation of the shares, stating that the sale was undervalued, opaque, and rushed, potentially resulting in significant financial losses for the Kenyan public. He questioned why the government would forgo sustained, long-term dividend income in exchange for short-term fiscal relief.

Critiquing the glaring lack of transparency, public participation, and parliamentary oversight, the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition leader reiterated that public wealth belongs to the citizens of Kenya and must be managed with absolute accountability and strict adherence to constitutional principles.

He warned that the transaction raises serious concerns regarding national sovereignty, governance, and respect for the judicial process, adding that the matter remains legally and constitutionally alive despite the physical completion of the sale.

Musyoka affirmed that the opposition will respect the courts and await the High Court’s determination, while reserving all legal and constitutional avenues to challenge the transaction and safeguard public interests.

Turning to press freedom, the Azimio leader condemned recent attacks directed at the media by United Democratic Alliance (UDA) officials, labeling the continued intimidation and blame shifting as misguided and unacceptable.

The opposition does not fund the media in any way, The media simply reports the truth as it is,” Musyoka clarified, urging the regime to focus on addressing its own governance shortcomings rather than targeting journalists.

He concluded by calling on Kenyans to remain vigilant, united, and committed to protecting national assets, urging the public to actively participate in safeguarding the country’s future.
