Kiambu Governor Wamatangi’s Woes Continue as Bank Accounts Frozen, Business Premises Demolished

NAIROBI, 16th January 2026 – A day after his business, estimated at Sh250 million, was demolished, the High Court has extended the orders issued in November last year freezing the five bank accounts of beleaguered Kiambu Governor Paul Kimani Wamatangi, his spouse, children and associates over an alleged Sh813 million corruption and economic crimes case.

On Thursday 16th January, Justice Benjamin Musyoki granted an injunction “barring Governor Wamatangi and his associates or anyone acting on their behalf from withdrawing, transferring, disposing of, or otherwise dealing with the bank accounts.”

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) alleges that the first-term governor corruptly abused his office while serving as the area Senator and the Chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Roads, Transportation and Housing between 2017 and 2022. The interim orders are in place until the hearing set before Judge Njuguna on 4th February,2026.

The companies alleged to be associated with Governor Wamatangi, of which he is said to be a bank signatory, include King Group Company Ltd, King Realtors Ltd, King Constructions Company Ltd, Quick Fix Auto Garage Ltd, and Lub Plus Oil and Energy Company Ltd.

According to records filed in court by EACC investigator Anderson Weru, the companies were awarded contracts worth Sh86.6 million by the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA), Sh726 million from the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), and from the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA).

We have completed investigations into the matter and would like to proceed with asset recovery and the forfeiture of the money to the State,” says the anti-graft agency.

On Tuesday sday night, 13th January, under heavy security, several vehicles and properties were destroyed at his restaurant, car and carpet washing business premises located along Douglas Wakihiiru Road, off Langata Road behind Nyayo National Stadium. In 2019, the premises were first demolished during President Uhuru Kenyatta’s regime and were reconstructed.

In a filed petition at the Milimani Commercial Magistrates Court, Wamatangi had sought an order to stop the planned demolition, saying that he had been paying rent to Kenya Railways following a lease agreement spanning 20 years.

Meanwhile, former Deputy President and DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua alleges that the weaponised attack on Governor Wamatangi is due to the expressed great concern and frustration from political nemesis over his rising popularity among the electorate.

“They are concerned about the impact of meetings to popularise the DCP Party by me and have come up with criminal charges by EACC on alleged and fictitious economic crimes,” Gachagua remarks on his X account.

He urges Governor Wamatangi to take heart, remain focused, and continue serving the people of Kiambu County in the face of intimidation and persecution.

According to a statement issued on 14th January, the Kenya Railways Corporation says it intends to construct a new railway station adjacent to Nyayo Stadium and a railway spur line. It commences from their Nairobi Central Station through the Nyayo National Stadium area, Kibera, to the Raila Odinga International Stadium in readiness for the upcoming AFCON 2026.

“This line will guarantee commuters a safe, reliable and affordable transport option, thus ensuring ease of movement,” the management statement reads in part.

Kenya Railways states that: “All encroachers were advised and issued with notices in good time to vacate the railway corridor to pave the way for the construction of the station and spur line.”

They reiterated their commitment to ensure that all encroachers are evicted for the fruitful completion of the development project.

Take note that all the structures and property found on the corridor will be demolished and/or removed without further notice and at the encroachers’ risk and costs,” the state corporation warns.
