KISUMU, Kenya 22nd Dec. –As the Christmas season approaches, women across all wards of Kisumu Central are receiving early festive cheer through a constituency-wide outreach led by their area Member of Parliament, Dr Joshua Oron.
The initiative, which involves the distribution of food items to women and mothers, is being conducted in every ward within Kisumu Central before expanding to all other constituencies across Kisumu County in the days following Christmas.
The programme reached Kaloleni in Shauri Moyo on December 22, where hundreds of women turned up to receive maize flour and other basic supplies intended to help households celebrate the season with dignity.
“No woman in Kisumu Central should be left out during Christmas,” Oron said. “We are going ward by ward to make sure that every mother benefits before we move to the rest of Kisumu County.”
Oron said the exercise reflects a long-standing personal commitment to supporting vulnerable families during the festive season.
He explained that the early Christmas initiative has been running for several years, having started long before he joined elective politics.
“I started doing this long before I became an elected leader,” he said. “Christmas is a day of celebration, a day of giving, and it is important that even those who have very little can share a meal with their families.”

According to the MP, many women in low-income areas face daily struggles that make festive celebrations difficult, with some households unable to afford even a basic meal.
“There are mothers who may not even be able to light a fire in their homes on Christmas Day,” Oron said. “When you give a mother unga, the whole family eats — the children and even the husband.”
After concluding the Kisumu Central phase, Oron said the programme would be extended to other constituencies in Kisumu County between December 24 and 27.
“What Kisumu Central is enjoying, other parts of Kisumu County must also enjoy,” he said. “This is about sharing the Christmas spirit across the entire county.”
During the event, the MP also urged residents, particularly young people, to register for national identity cards and voter registration, saying civic participation begins with proper documentation.
“There is no way we can elect the leaders we want if we do not have votes, and there are no votes without IDs,” he said.
“I encourage all young people, young mothers and all eligible citizens to go out and register.”
He noted that several centres in Kisumu Central, including Huduma Centre, are currently facilitating ID issuance and voter registration.

The outreach comes at a time when Oron is increasingly being mentioned as a potential candidate for the Kisumu County governor’s seat in the 2027 general election.
Although he did not directly reference the race, his focus on countywide activities and grassroots engagement reflected a growing emphasis beyond his constituency.
For many women who attended the Kaloleni event, the early Christmas support offered relief and hope.
“This will help us celebrate Christmas with our children,” said one beneficiary. “We are grateful that he remembered us.”
As Kisumu Central women continue to receive the festive packages ward by ward, the programme is set to culminate in a broader county tour aimed at spreading the spirit of Christmas to households across Kisumu County.
