AKADO VTC, Kisumu East July 17 –Kisumu County has entered into a partnership with a Swiss firm, Comundo, to revamp its vocational training centres, ensuring skills development meets current market demands.
The collaboration aims to elevate Kenya’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector, enhancing global competitiveness.
Speaking at a conference on Centres of Vocational Expertise in Action at Akado VTC in Kisumu East, Comundo Country Director Marc Bloch highlighted their investment in modernising training facilities.
“We’ve established a state-of-the-art motor vehicle mechanics department in Akado to equip students with market-relevant skills,” said Bloch.
The Swiss firm is also supporting the Sabako Vocational Training Centre in Kisumu West with advanced fish farming technology to tackle food security.

Bloch said the initiative is community-driven, particularly around Lake Victoria as part of skills enhancement targeting locations.
“Our fish farming project empowers locals with skills to harness the Lake’s resources sustainably”, emphasised Bloch.
He further noted Comundo’s support includes technical expertise in curriculum development that ensures training is industry-aligned and competitive.
Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang Nyong’o lauded the partnership, stating that his administration is committed to building a future that positively transforms the economic lives of young people.
“I’ve directed my Education Minister to draft a cabinet paper for upgrading TVETs with modern infrastructure and equipment,” Nyong’o announced.
Kisumu County Education Chief Officer Eng. Bovince Ochieng echoed the sentiment, noting the county’s commitment to youth empowerment.
“We’re prioritising the full equipping of our TVETs in upcoming budgets to match global training standards,” Ochieng revealed.

This partnership underscores Kisumu’s push to attract youth to technical careers, bridging the gap between local skills and international job markets.
With such transformative collaborations, the county is poised to become a hub for vocational excellence.
