National Govt Takes Over Kibuye Market Rebuild, Urges Traders to Peacefully Relocate

Kisumu City Department announces the temporary relocation of over 4,000 traders to pave the way for phase two of the market’s transformation into a modern complex.

KIBUYE, Kisumu July 9 -The Kisumu County Government has announced plans to temporarily relocate traders from Kibuye Market as the national government steps in to complete the second phase of construction.

Addressing a media conference in Kisumu on Tuesday, City Manager Abala Wanga confirmed that the exercise, set to begin in August, will see traders moved to Uhuru Business Park to allow for uninterrupted rebuilding.

We urge our traders to embrace this project and peacefully relocate so we can fast-track the modernisation of Kibuye Market,” Wanga appealed.

He emphasised that the move is crucial to ensuring the timely completion of the project, which is now under the State Department for Housing and Urban Development.

The takeover follows discussions between Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o and President William Ruto.

During the governor’s recent visit to the State House, Kibuye Market was highlighted as a key project seeking national government support,” Wanga revealed.

The market is expected to be fully operational before the next general elections.

To prevent disruptions, Wanga stressed the importance of dialogue.

“We are engaging traders to ensure smooth relocation and avoid legal hurdles that could delay progress.”

He added that the completion of Kibuye aligns with Nyong’o’s vision of enhancing trade in Kisumu, complementing other county-built markets like Otonglo and Pap Onditi.

In a separate development, the county has embarked on a street lighting assessment to improve security.

I will personally inspect non-functional lights in Nyalenda, Manyatta, Migosi, and major streets to ensure immediate repairs,” Wanga stated.
