Practical Action, Partners Launch ELMECC Project to Boost Clean Cooking Solutions in Kenya

NAIROBI, January 2026Practical Action Kenya, in partnership with Gamos East Africa and the Clean Cooking Association of Kenya (CCAK), has officially launched the Enhancement of Local Manufacturing and Energy Crops Cultivation for Clean Cooking (ELMECC) Project at a Nairobi hotel, marking a significant milestone in advancing Kenya’s clean cooking agenda.

The ELMECC Project is designed to strengthen local manufacturing of clean cooking technologies while promoting sustainable energy crop cultivation across Nairobi, Nakuru, Kilifi, Kajiado and Kisumu counties.

The initiative seeks to support local enterprises, enhance market linkages, and strengthen collaboration between county and national governments to accelerate the transition to clean, affordable and locally produced cooking solutions.

Beyond technology, project partners emphasised that ELMECC focuses on people, systems and long-term impact. The programme is expected to create dignified employment opportunities, strengthen clean cooking value chains, improve household health, support resilient livelihoods and contribute to reduced environmental degradation.

The launch event brought together representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, county governments, private sector actors, development partners and other key stakeholders, all of whom reaffirmed their commitment to promoting clean cooking as a pathway to climate action and sustainable development.

Practical Action Kenya and its partners expressed appreciation to UK PACT (Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions) for supporting the implementation of the ELMECC Project. The funding is enabling practical, locally driven solutions that are transforming lives while strengthening Kenya’s clean cooking ecosystem.

The ELMECC Project is expected to play a critical role in accelerating Kenya’s transition to clean energy for cooking, while unlocking inclusive economic opportunities and supporting climate-resilient development.
