STATE HOUSE, Nairobi,19th August –President William Ruto has constituted a Multi-Agency Team on the War Against Corruption (MAT), to effectively address wanton corruption, economic crimes, and related offences in the country.
This anti-graft campaign, Dr Ruto noted, will be achieved through improving cooperation, coordination and collaboration among the agencies, and the private sector.
MAT’s other key objectives include identifying, sourcing and adequately funding the relevant agencies.
“Sharing best practices and approaches for the fight against the vice, and coming up with ideal communication strategies for public sensitisation on the gains and achievements made so far,” Dr Ruto said in the Presidential Proclamation signed on August 18th.
He added that the team will closely engage with relevant local and foreign agencies for effectiveness and optimum realisation of the fight against economic crimes, organised crimes and recovery of the proceeds of crime.
President Ruto, his Deputy Prof Kithure Kindiki, and former Premier Raila Odinga have in recent times castigated leaders for the vice.
Dr Ruto singled out Kenya’s Parliament and Senate Committees for ‘sabotaging or passing government bills for kickbacks,’ when he addressed a joint UDA-ODM Parliamentary Group meeting held in Karen yesterday.
MAT shall be chaired by the Executive Office of the President, and the secretariat shall be overseen by the Attorney General’s Office.
It will also comprise state agencies such as the National Intelligence Service (NIS), the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission(EACC), the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP), the Assets Recovery Authority (ARA), and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
The Financial Reporting Centre (FRC), Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).
MAT’s operations will be funded from the budgetary allocations of its member entities and other sources.
