“I’m calling on all parties to uphold and implement the Washington Accord to enable the people of Eastern DRC to return home, rebuild their lives, and reclaim peace, dignity, and hope,”-Dr Ruto
WASHINGTON DC, USA –President William Ruto has hailed the recent signing of the Washington Accord, a landmark peace agreement between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda, as a huge breakthrough in efforts to end decades of conflict in Eastern DRC.
“The prolonged conflict in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo has endured far beyond what humanity can reasonably bear,” Dr Ruto stated.
“For decades,” he noted that the conflict has claimed innumerable lives and driven countless families from the safety of their homes.
“A generation of children has been stripped of its innocence, deprived of education, and denied the simple promise of a stable childhood.”
The Head of State emphasised that normal commercial activity and cross-border trade, vital for regional prosperity, have been severely disrupted, hindering development and exacerbating hardship.
“This prolonged suffering is a profound injustice to the people of Eastern DRC, who deserve lasting stability and the chance to build a peaceful, dignified, and prosperous future for themselves and their nation,” he said.

“The Washington Accord now stands as the most credible and hopeful pathway to ending three decades of conflict and inaugurating a new chapter of friendship, cooperation, and mutual progress in our region,” Dr Ruto declared.
He expressed gratitude to President Trump for his commitment and leadership in brokering the agreement, as well as the East African Community (EAC), the Southern African Development Community(SADC), and all mediators involved in the peace process.
To realise the full implementation of the Washington Accord, Dr Ruto is calling on all parties to uphold it to enable the people of Eastern DRC to return home, rebuild their lives, and reclaim peace, dignity, and hope.
