KISUMU, Kenya September –Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o has called on the United Nations and the African Union to take decisive action in addressing the crises in Gaza and Ukraine, as well as ongoing conflicts in the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
He emphasised that the brutal slaughter of innocent civilians must come to an end.
Speaking in Kisumu during a tree-planting ceremony in preparation for the International Day of Peace 2025, whose theme is “Act Now for a Peaceful World, ” Nyong’o stressed the urgency of focusing global efforts on the crises in Gaza and Ukraine, stating that the suffering observed there must be halted immediately.
“Let us concentrate on Gaza and Ukraine; it is up to us in Africa to resolve the issues within the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of Congo,” Nyong’o declared.
He underscored the necessity of guiding the world toward conflict resolution to promote peaceful coexistence.
“Peace must be advocated between nations, government to government, and locally within Africa, where we need to tackle border and internal conflicts. We must cultivate an environment conducive to political, religious, and inter-country harmony.”
Echoing Nyong’o’s sentiments, the Chairman of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia, condemned the ongoing violence in Gaza, describing it as genocide.
Dr Kobia also expressed concern over the rise of criminal gangs, insisting that they must be eradicated at all costs.
The NCIC, in collaboration with the Kisumu County Government, is spearheading the celebrations for the International Day of Peace.
Established by the United Nations in 1981, the International Day of Peace (IDoP) is observed annually on September 21, aiming to promote peace and nonviolence worldwide.

Governor Nyong’o has been vocal in condemning the turmoil in both Gaza and Ukraine, declaring that these conflicts contribute to unimaginable human suffering just as the world prepares to mark the International Day of Peace.
He implored the international community to strive for lasting solutions to the crises afflicting innocent civilians in these regions.
Dr Kobia praised Nyong’o for adeptly managing the sensitive border issues in the Kisumu-Kericho areas and highlighted the integral connection between peace and environmental stewardship.
In a show of solidarity, the two leaders oversaw a tree-planting initiative at Kasagam Secondary School on Saturday 20th, thus promoting a combined message of peace and environmental responsibility.
