Safaricom telco has rolled out an ambitious drive aimed at connecting more Kenyans to easy access to the internet.
Dubbed the ‘Maisha Poa ni Digital’ campaign, it will enable Micro, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises to thrive.
The mobile end-users will also be able to stay in touch with their loved ones, by banking on affordable 4G and 5G smartphones.
Speaking at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Ground in Kisumu on Friday, May 16th, Fawzia Ali, Safaricom’s Chief Consumer Business Officer, said the drive will be conducted for a longer period across the country.
“This rollout is enabling first-time internet users to access essential services, and youth to discover new opportunities online. Small businesses to reach more customers, making digital access possible for everyone, everywhere,” she said.
According to Fawzia, the drive was kick-started at this time; “So that nearly half of our Kenyans who are still on 2G phones (Kabambe or Katululu), in the new digital revolution.”

As the national government is digitising nearly all its services, Fawzia said that Safaricom is keen on ensuring that Kenyans, especially the youth, have fast and efficient access to online job opportunities.
“For most of our youth, their employment opportunities will be on social media,” she stated.
“They will either be content creators or influencers. How will they be able to take advantage of all these opportunities if they are still on 2G devices?” she wondered.
To further promote business entrepreneurship, Fawzia stressed that the campaign further targets the Mama Mbogas to have a presence on social media.
During the campaigns, customers who purchase a smartphone with a Safaricom SIM card will be rewarded with 5.5GB to support his/her connection, while those who buy a Safaricom router stand a chance to get gifts ranging from airtime to merchandise.
