Solar Milk Coolers Signal New Dawn for Food Security As Govt Revitalises Dairy Sector in Kisumu

MUHORONI, May 2026-In a major boost to food security and agricultural transformation, the National Government has handed over two solar-powered bulk milk coolers, each with a storage capacity of 1,000 litres to cooperative societies in Muhoroni Constituency, Kisumu County.

The 9.4 million initiative is part of a broader strategy to drive sustainable development and enhance household incomes through dairy farming.

Speaking on Saturday during the handover ceremony at Muhoroni Stadium, Principal Secretary for Gender and Children Services, Carren Ageng’o, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a whole-government approach aimed at revitalising the agricultural sector.

“We are here today with my colleague, Trade PS Regina Ombam, to demonstrate the whole-government approach that seeks to revitalise the agricultural sector,” said Ageng’o.

She noted that the solar-driven coolers would enable over 600 dairy farmers in the region to aggregate 2,000 litres of milk daily, significantly reducing post-harvest spoilage and improving earnings.

“The infrastructure will protect the daily yield from post-harvest spoilage and save millions of litres of milk annually, thus boosting the local economy,” PS Ageng’o added.

She further revealed that the government has rolled out interventions including capital injection, financial literacy training, subsidised sexed semen, ongoing animal vaccination programmes, and farmer field days.

She urged youth to venture into dairy farming and encouraged farmers to join cooperative societies for better access to government programmes.

Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA) Chairman James Waore Diang’a, announced that the Authority will host the coolers at their designated dairy farm site in Muhoroni, further noting that LBDA remains steadfast in it’s mandate to drive inclusive socio-economic development through targeted impactful interventions.

“This strategic initiative is designed to strengthen the region’s livestock value chain by enhancing production, reducing post-harvest losses, and improving revenue for dairy farmers,” Waore stated.

The project, spearheaded by the Ministry of Agriculture, targets a 30 per cent increase in household incomes among dairy farmers and pastoralist communities by the year 2028.

During the flag-off ceremony, multi-agency teams also activated key government services including SHA registration, national ID registration, and IEBC registration.
