HOMABAY, 13th August 2026 –Danish Otieno Onyango has been sworn in as the new Deputy Governor of Homa Bay County in a colourful ceremony held in Homa Bay Town.
Onyango replaces Joseph Oyugi Magwanga, who resigned in February 2026 following a protracted political fallout with Governor Gladys Wanga.
Speaking during the event, Governor Wanga said the appointment of a substantive deputy presents an opportunity to build on gains made in the last four years.
“This heralds a new era of serving the people of Homa Bay County with dedication, integrity, and efficiency,” Wanga said.
Onyango, who hails from Kasewe Location in Kabondo West Ward, Kabondo Kasipul Sub-County, previously served as County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Roads, Public Works, Transport and Infrastructure since his appointment in 2022.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics, Political Science and Public Administration from the University of Nairobi, and a Master of Arts degree in Development Studies. Before joining the county government, he worked at the State Department of Infrastructure.
Governor Wanga lauded Onyango for spearheading key infrastructure projects, including partnership with the national government on road upgrades in Homa Bay Town and the expansion of Kabunde Airstrip.
He also played a key role in the management of major events such as the 2025 Devolution Conference and the Homa Bay International Investment Conference.

Onyango also briefly acted as CECM for Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Development-a docket previously held by Magwanga.
In the same ceremony, Governor Wanga swore in two new CECMs: Isaac Victor Ongiri for Governance, Administration, Communication and Devolution, and Elijah Obiny Dede for Trade, Industry, Investment and Cooperatives Development.
“Their inclusion in the County Cabinet will bring dynamism, efficiency and responsiveness to this administration. Let the work begin for the betterment of Homa Bay County and its people,” the Governor urged.
